Welcome back and happy Week 4!
We added five new names to our QB1 list last week, tallying 24 different players with a top-12 finish through the first three weeks of the season. With players such as Malik Willis, Andy Dalton, Sam Darnold, and Bo Nix all finishing ahead of household names like Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray, Jared Goff, and Geno Smith, we were reminded just how volatile and exciting this game can be. This proves the importance of SuperFlex and 2QB leagues, which is exactly why we’re here today.
Below is our running list of QB1 performances thus far this season, and today we’ll be highlighting three QBs (ranked outside the Ballers’ top 12) who display QB1 upside based on their matchups. Be sure to check the Ballers Week 4 Rankings before making your final start/sit decisions this week!
Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield, Jalen Hurts, Jayden Daniels, Anthony Richardson, Lamar Jackson, Derek Carr, Geno Smith, CJ Stroud, Tua Tagovailoa, Jordan Love, Matthew Stafford, Kyler Murray, Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones, Kirk Cousins, Joe Burrow, Deshaun Watson, Aaron Rodgers, Dak Prescott, Brock Purdy, Malik Willis, Andy Dalton, Justin Fields.
16. Baker Mayfield
Baker’s QB27 overall performance was a letdown in Week 3, but I’m right back to the well against Philadelphia this week.
The Eagles’ rebuilt secondary is coming off their best performance of the season, holding the red-hot Saints to just 12 points and 142 yards passing last week. They enter Week 4 ranked 12th in PPG to opposing fantasy QBs, but once again, PFF highly favors Mike Evans and Chris Godwin in all of their individual matchups. HC Todd Bowles and Baker have both been vocal about getting Evans “more involved” this week, however, on paper, this looks to be another high-volume day for Godwin.
My concern in this matchup is the amount of pressure Baker has been facing. Tampa’s offensive line has not been able to provide much time against top-tier defensive lines like Detroit and Denver and may struggle again this week in Philadelphia. The Bucs are allowing (tied for) the fifth-highest pressure rate in the league at 29% of dropbacks, while the Eagles’ defensive line is recording the (tied for) seventh-highest pressure rate at 36%.
They are at a mismatch in both pass and run blocking and have been unable to find any balance to supplement their passing attack, rushing for just 273 yards total (27th) through the first three weeks. If new OC Liam Coen is unable to protect Baker, we can expect another heavy dose of short-yardage passes to Godwin, who is currently running 59.1% of his routes from the slot.
Although this isn’t a perfect matchup by any means, another QB1 performance is certainly in the realm of possibility. As +1.5 point underdogs and with a team-implied point total of 20.5, I’m happy to chase the positive game script with Baker this week.

17. Andy Dalton
After a combined 13 points in the first two weeks, Andy Dalton stepped on the field for the first time in a calendar year and shredded the Raiders to the tune of 36-22. Dalton took a deflated Panthers team on the road, finishing 26 of 37 for 319 passing yards and three touchdowns, resulting in a QB8 finish on the week. He brought a spark to this franchise, revitalizing the likes of Chuba Hubbard, Diontae Johnson, and any fantasy managers holding out hope on their season. Perhaps Dave Canales has been whispering in the wrong QB’s ear.
I should note that this pick is less of an indictment in Dalton, and more of a disbelief in the Bengals’ defense, who come in ranked 20th in PPG to opposing QBs thus far. After a promising performance against Mahomes and Kansas City, this defense was utterly embarrassed by Jayden Daniels and the Commanders on MNF in Week 3.
Daniels completed a record-setting 91.3% of his passes (the highest ever for a rookie), en route to the QB3 overall finish. The Bengals’ defense was unable to force a single turnover or punt and allowed an (almost) eight-minute game-clinching drive in the fourth quarter. It was a hard-to-watch performance from Lou Anarumo’s squad.
The Panthers are smack-dab in the middle at a team-implied point total of 21.5, but as +4.5 home underdogs, the game script should be in Dalton’s favor to hit another 30+ pass attempts. PFF favors the Panthers’ line in both pass and run blocking, which should help establish the run game, as well as allowing him the time he needs to get comfortable in the pocket. Although the team lost WR Adam Thielen to IR, they will now look to first-round rookie Xavier Legette to step into a more prominent role.
Dalton is no superstar, but he is a competent QB in a favorable matchup. If the same version of this Bengals defense shows up this week, there will be plenty of QB1 upside for the “Red Rifle.”
Does Andy Dalton have the throw of the year so far?

20. Caleb Williams
[Caleb Williams enters the chat].
Perhaps the expectations have been unreasonably high for this year’s first overall pick. Perhaps as a society, we’ve become far too driven by immediate results. Perhaps when we deem someone a “generational prospect” there is nowhere to go but down. Perhaps all of these are true, but personally, I think there’s value in facing a learning curve upon entering the NFL.
For people who “don’t get nervous” and have excelled at something their entire lives, sometimes the best thing is to be humbled and face some real adversity. This is where you have to dig deep and see what you’re truly made of. It’s what separates the men from the boys, the dogs from the dawgs, and the “goods” from the “greats.”

After two rough games to start his career, Caleb was finally able to produce relevant fantasy numbers (QB14) against the Colts last week. While this was a better performance in fantasy than real life, it was exciting to see Caleb connect on his first two professional touchdowns, as well as reach the 300-yard mark for the first time. This week, he will look to build on that momentum against a Rams secondary that has been torched by every opponent so far.
L.A.’s secondary ranks 31st in PPG to opposing QBs, just one week removed from a QB5 overall performance from Brock Purdy, despite being down both Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey. While their run defense has been adequate so far this season, there is plenty of room to attack them through the air, especially if Keenan Allen is able to return from injury. If so, he will line up primarily against SCB Quentin Lake, who currently ranks 96th of 99 qualified CBs (for all you DFS fans out there).
Chicago has been unable to find any success on the ground this season, putting the fate of the franchise (unfairly and) squarely on the shoulders of their rookie QB, however, PFF favors Chicago’s OL in all metrics this week. If the Bears are able to find some balance on offense, this should benefit Williams greatly.
The Bears are -3.0 point home favorites and currently sit at a healthy team-implied total of 21.75. Although I will never count on OC Shane Waldron to do the right thing, this appears to be a matchup he can use to highlight his young superstar, building confidence and momentum for the rest of the season. Especially if he can get his healthy trio of WRs, there is plenty of upside and opportunity for Caleb to post his first week as a QB1.
